Environmental Impact – Bimbi Parks Commitment
Our fragile home Needs us all to do our bit
Our Uncompromising Environmental Commitment
At Bimbi Park, we’re deeply committed to minimizing our environmental impact and protecting the stunning natural surroundings of Cape Otway. Our passion drives us to operate sustainably, ensuring we minimize our ecological footprint and preserve this beautiful region for future generations. Here’s how Bimbi Park actively reduces its environmental impact:
Energy Efficiency and Solar Power
At Bimbi Park, nestled within a stunning national park, our limited electricity supply drives us to prioritize energy efficiency without compromising our guests’ comfort, from LED lighting and energy-efficient appliances to solar-powered cabins designed for sustainability.

Sustainable Building Practices
Our cabins and camping pods are designed with sustainability at their core, providing a comfortable stay while minimizing environmental impact. We carefully select eco-friendly materials, ensuring a low carbon footprint. All cabins built in the last 10 years feature double-glazed windows, double-insulated walls, ceilings, and insulated floors—helping to reduce energy use while keeping you cozy. Additionally, each cabin is equipped with water-saving taps, efficient toilets, and heaters with timers, so you can relax knowing your stay is both comfortable and eco-friendly.
Water Conservation
Another challenge we faced was no town water, so we focused on efficiency without compromising guest comfort. We added 500,000 litres of water tanks and connected all our roofs to collect rainwater, and implemented lots or water saving measures, which saves us about 4 million litres a year.
Wastewater Treatment Plant
When we got to Bimbi there were septic tanks around the park that treated the wastewater, and then the effluent went into realm drains underground and the plants used the nutrients. It has been done this way for years and in sandy soil is very successful. We have taken it one step further. After the septic tanks all the effluent is now pumped to our treatment plant and treated. Without chemicals, the effluent goes from a brown murky high nutrient liquid to something that looks like drinking water. It’s “B’ grade water which we can’t drink but can drip irrigate. Our trees love it. When government legislation changes and we are able to do so, we will use this water in our toilets, it’s all plumbed and ready to go.
This dramatically reduces our environmental footprint
Soap Dispensers
On a short trip, I saw a motel using soap pump dispensers instead of plastic bottles—what a great idea! Back at Bimbi Park, I discovered that 46% of the product from used bottles went unused and to landfill. By switching to bulk dispensers, we can significantly reduce this waste, as a single 15-liter tub replaces 1,388 small bottles. With 404 million visitor nights annually in Australia, it’s crucial to adopt such eco-friendly practices.
Recycling and Responsible Waste Managment
At Bimbi Park, we prioritize recycling and responsible waste management to protect our environment and keep our park beautiful. At our 4 bin areas, please use the yellow-lidded bins for recyclables, the red-lidded bins for general landfill waste, and place food scraps in the green-lidded bins or feed them to our chickens. Your efforts help us maintain a clean and enjoyable environment for everyone. For more details see video above.
In House Food Scrap Recycling
We have food bins at all our bin areas so guests can put their food scraps in. These bins go to our chickens, you can feed them yourself. We save 100s of bins of food scraps from going into land fill.
Eco-Friendly Cleaning Products
At Bimbi Park, we are committed to using biodegradable, eco-friendly cleaning products to minimize chemical runoff into the soil and in our treatment plant, which helps keep the surrounding ecosystem healthy and protects local wildlife. We use white vinegar whenever possible for its natural cleaning properties. Frank, swears by white vinegar in his commercial kitchen and uses it extensively for its effectiveness and eco-friendliness.
Linen in our Accommodation
At Bimbi Park, we supply one set of linen in the accommodation that has linen, as part of our commitment to environmental sustainability. Limiting the amount of linen used, we help reduce water, energy, and detergent consumption, contributing to a healthier ecosystem. However, we understand that you may need extra linen during your stay. If that’s the case, simply visit reception the day before, and we’ll happily provide what you need. Your cooperation in supporting our eco-friendly efforts is greatly appreciated!
Tree and Native Plant Planting
At Bimbi Park, we are deeply committed to enhancing our natural environment through extensive tree and native plant planting. Over the years, we have planted thousands of trees and native plants, creating vibrant habitats that support local wildlife and bird species. This ongoing effort enriches the park’s landscape, providing a lush and thriving natural setting for our guests to enjoy. By nurturing these plants, we not only contribute to the beauty of Bimbi Park but also promote ecological balance and biodiversity. Come and experience the serene beauty of our park’s natural habitat, where every tree and plant plays a role in sustaining our unique ecosystem. Keep an eye out for our next tree planting weekend.
Protecting Wildlife and Habitat
We work hard to protect the native wildlife that calls Bimbi Park home. This includes educating our guests on how to observe wildlife without disturbing it, such as keeping a safe distance from koalas and not feeding the animals.
We preserve the natural bushland, avoiding unnecessary landscaping and ensuring that the park blends harmoniously with the surrounding environment.

Encouraging Responsible Guests
At Bimbi Park, we provide facilities to help all our guests be environmentally responsible. We ask that you respect the Otways and follow the “Leave No Trace” principle—take photos, leave only footprints, and bring all rubbish back to Bimbi Park, where you’ll find designated recycling and waste bins, there are deposit stations for drink containers in Apollo Bay and Colac. Please stay on marked paths and roads, avoid handling or feeding wildlife, and minimize your use of water, waste, and power. Together, with the facilities we provide, we can create a greener, more sustainable future.
“Leave No Trace” take photos, leave only footprints
Reusable Stainless Steal Drink Bottles
At Bimbi Park, we offer insulated stainless steel reusable drink bottles, designed with the environment in mind. These durable, eco-friendly bottles help keep your drinks hot or cold for hours while reducing single-use plastic waste. Perfect for staying hydrated on your adventures while supporting sustainable choices and protecting the surrounding wildlife.
Fire Bricks and Fire Wood
At Bimbi Park, we sell eco-friendly fire bricks made from clean hardwood sawdust, a byproduct of milling that would otherwise go to landfill. These bricks burn hotter, produce less smoke, and leave minimal ash thanks to their low moisture content. While we sometimes stock firewood, we prefer these bricks for their environmental benefits, as no trees are directly cut down to produce them.
